The Surface refers to the remains of the world above the crater settlement known as The Underground.
Following The Collapse, most of the planet’s cities were abandoned as the Forsaken Virus spread across populated regions. The environment above ground now consists of ruined urban districts, damaged infrastructure, and large areas of uncontrolled infection.
The Surface contains the remains of the pre-collapse world, including buildings, streets, vehicles, and industrial facilities left behind when civilization fell.
Description
The Surface is composed primarily of abandoned city environments and surrounding infrastructure.
Buildings remain partially standing in many areas, though structural damage and long-term decay have left large sections unstable. Roads are fractured, debris fields cover large parts of the city, and many districts show signs of extensive collapse.
Remnants of the Forsaken Virus can be found throughout the environment. Infected growths, tendrils, and contamination are present across many surfaces and structures.
Forsaken Presence
Large portions of the Surface are inhabited by Forsaken creatures created by infection from the Forsaken Virus.
These organisms move through abandoned districts and ruined structures across the city. Their presence makes most areas of the Surface dangerous for unprotected survivors.
Surface Operations
Despite the danger, the Surface remains an important source of resources for the survivors living in The Underground.
Teams known as Runners travel into the ruins to recover materials left behind after the collapse of civilization. Salvaged equipment, machinery, and tools are used to maintain infrastructure within the crater settlement.
Surface operations are considered high-risk due to environmental hazards and encounters with the Forsaken.
