The Underground
The Underground is the largest surviving human settlement in the world of JunkRats.
The settlement exists inside a massive crater formed when part of the city collapsed during early attempts to contain the Forsaken Virus. Over time, survivors rebuilt within the crater using materials recovered from the surrounding ruins.
Today, the Underground serves as the primary population center for the remaining survivors following The Collapse.
Location
The Underground is located within the center of a collapsed district of the ruined city.
The crater sits below the level of the surrounding streets, with the broken remains of buildings forming a ring around the settlement. While the crater is lower than the surrounding city, it remains open to the sky.
Structures within the settlement are built along the inner slopes of the crater as well as across the lower sections of the collapse zone.
Development
In the years following the Collapse, survivors gradually gathered inside the crater and began rebuilding.
Using scrap, damaged infrastructure, and materials salvaged from the surrounding ruins, they constructed shelters, walkways, and defensive barriers. Over time the settlement expanded into a structured community capable of supporting a large population.
Recovered power systems, filtration equipment, and salvaged machinery help maintain the basic infrastructure required for long-term survival.
Society
Life within the Underground is heavily regulated in order to preserve resources and maintain stability.
Access to supplies, equipment, and movement within the settlement is controlled to ensure the community can continue operating. Maintaining infrastructure and recovering materials from the surface are considered essential responsibilities.
Surface Operations
Despite the protection offered by the crater settlement, the Underground cannot survive without resources from the surface.
To obtain these materials, the settlement sends trained scavengers known as Runners into the ruins of the city.
Runners retrieve scrap, tools, technology, and other supplies needed to maintain the settlement. These missions are extremely dangerous due to the presence of the Forsaken and the unstable environment of the ruined city.
