The Underground
The Underground is the largest organized human settlement in the world of JunkRats and the primary center of human survival following The Collapse.
The faction operates from within a massive crater created when part of the city collapsed during early attempts to contain the spread of the Forsaken Virus. Over time, survivors gathered inside the crater and rebuilt the area into a functioning settlement using materials salvaged from the surrounding ruins.
Today, the Underground functions as both a settlement and a governing authority over the surviving population that lives within the crater.
Structure
The Underground operates as a highly controlled survival community.
Leadership is centralized under Vince, who oversees the stability and operation of the settlement. Infrastructure maintenance, resource management, and security are tightly organized in order to preserve the limited resources available to the population.
Because the world outside the crater remains extremely dangerous, most residents rarely leave the settlement.
Territory
The Underground occupies the interior of a collapsed city district.
The crater lies below the level of the surrounding streets, with the ruined remains of buildings forming a ring around the settlement. Structures within the Underground are built along the inner slopes of the crater and across the lower sections of the collapse zone.
Although the crater sits below street level, it remains open to the sky and is partially connected to surrounding infrastructure such as tunnels and underground transit systems.
Surface Operations
Despite its relative safety, the Underground cannot sustain itself without resources recovered from the ruined city above.
To obtain these materials, the faction organizes specialized scavenging teams known as Runners. These individuals are sent to the Surface to recover scrap, equipment, technology, and other supplies required to maintain the settlement.
Runner missions are considered some of the most dangerous assignments within the Underground due to the presence of the Forsaken and the unstable condition of the abandoned city.
Influence
As the largest surviving human settlement, the Underground exerts significant influence over the remaining population in the region.
Its systems of leadership, supply control, and surface operations allow the settlement to maintain a fragile stability in a world largely overrun by infection.
However, not all survivors operate within the authority of the Underground, and some individuals have begun operating independently in the ruins beyond the crater.
